CT AORTIC ANGIOGRAPHY

CT Aortic Angiography

One type of specialty CT (computed tomography) scan that 611 MRI provides is called a CTA scan. CTA stands for computed tomography angiography. Angiography, also known as arteriography, is an imaging method used to photograph the blood vessels. Specifically, this exam looks at the aorta, your largest artery. A CT scan, also known as a CAT scan, is an imaging method that produces cross sectional images of the body. As you pass through the scanner, images of your body will be captured.

The aorta plays an important role in delivering oxygen-rich blood to the entire body. The purpose of a CT angiogram is to look for any defects or functional problems with your aorta. There are several problems that a doctor may be looking for when ordering a CTA of the aorta, including:

  • Aneurysm
  • Bleeding of the aortic walls
  • Aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aorta)
  • Congenital defects
  • Inflammation of the aorta
  • Peripheral artery disease

A CTA utilizes a CT scanner to view the aorta. A contrast agent will be administered to the patient to help create a more vivid and detailed picture.
